The Copperfield Department

OVERVIEW

The Copperfield Department is a satiric text-based puzzle game where players take over the role of a social media detective. As tasked by Big Business Inc., a company controlling the country, your job is to hunt for social media accounts that could prove harmful to their image. Your task is to unmask the suspects behind these accounts and hold them accountable. Investigations take place within your office, which is equipped with both a computer for gathering information and a pinboard for organising your findings. The game is set in a fictional country during an imaginary era between the 1960s and 1990s, an alternate timeline where social media already exists.

About the project

This project was particularly exciting as it involved a retro UI designed to evoke a specific sense of nostalgia. The design thrived on the balance between the simple, raw structures of early operating systems and a modern, intuitive design language. The challenge was to find the 'sweet spot': creating a UI that meets the habits of today's users while feeling as though it had been used in the 1990s.

To achieve a unique retro sci-fi look and represent an imaginary era, various elements—such as color concepts from Film Noir, the digital revolution, and modern social media—served as inspiration. From these, I developed concept art that acted as a blueprint for the design of the environment, menus, and 3D models.

The hand-painted textures of the 3D models, the lighting composition, and the post-processing provide the final polish. Through many small details, I helped give the game a design language that stands out from similar titles and perfectly complements the game's content.
